Skooby Mcmurda

Story

Hey! My name is Sean McConnell, but I'm better known by my stage name: Skooby McMurda. I'm from New Orleans, LA. I'm 27 years old. I've been Djing for 7 years and producing for about 3 months. I have a collective of talented local artists called Murda Mystery. We host underground events mostly in New Orleans, but also in other parts of Louisiana, and even sometimes Mississippi or Texas. I love to make and perform edm experimental bass music. Although bass music is my main genre, I love to diversify my dj sets by slipping in other bass filled edm songs like deep/bass house, Riddim, etc. I can't wait to grow as an artist. I'm engaged to the most amazing woman ever, Michelle Gallipoli (soon to be McConnell/McMurda). She's super supportive of what I do, and she's my manager as well. She also manages the other dj's in our collective which is currently growing. In the past year alone, we've accomplished so much and I can't wait to see what the future holds for us!

What is music to you? What does it give you?

Music for me is a way to express myself and share it with the world, hoping I can help at least one person by being relatable. For me, it can be anything you want it to be. It can be a way to escape or cope with certain feelings, or at the same time it can be a way to feel something.

What is your music dream?

My music dream is to make dope music and for the world to hear it. I hope to tour the world and play my music at festivals and get the amazing energy and feeling of others vibing to music I wrote.

If you could change the world - what would you start with?

I would try to unite everyone as equal, loving, peaceful human beings. With all the craziness and darkness going on in the world today, I'd love to be the light for others.

Which is the most memorable song from your childhood?

I'd probably have to say it would either be "Thank You" by Led Zeppelin because it's my mom's favorite band. Or "Welcome to my Nightmare" by Alice Cooper because when I was like 4 years old I apparently knew every word to the song and would pretend to be performing it. There's even a home video of me doing it!

Who are your favorite musical artists or bands?

Honestly, I'd have to say one of the top would be Skrillex. People can hate all they want, but he's the one who inspired me to be a dj/producer. He was my first introduction to "brostep", the heavier americanized version of dubstep. He also has a really good stage presence which inspires me to be just as good of a performer. I'm also a fan of pretty much anyone Wakaan, but especially Luzcid. He's got a really unique style, a dope stage presence, and he's still humble and keeps in touch with his fans. He's actually the one who's mentoring me in production. Third, I'd have to say I'm a huge fan of anything Spicy Bois, particularly Meso. They really have a distinct experimental bass sound that really inspires me and my music.

What inspires you to make music?

I always loved to listen to music, and many different genres. I've also always loved to perform. Now being able to write my own music and for others to hear it and tell me they're proud of me is such a great feeling. I really love the feeling of playing a live show, interacting with the crowd, feeling their energy and giving it back even stronger, there's nothing quite like it.

What is the message you want to send with your music?

I just want people to vibe to my music and have fun to it. I also love having fun writing and performing my music. If there's any other message that emerges, so be it, but basically my message is "enjoy life, do what you love, chase your dreams and don't give up"

How do you feel when you perform in front of an audience?

I feel amazing. The feeling of the energy from the crowd when I play what they want to hear, and the energy I take in and give back stronger. The feeling of people dancing to music I made is amazing..

How do you see the musicians’ reality nowadays? What could be improved?

I see that in my main genre, there's high demand for my kind of music, but there's also so many others doing the same thing and the market is flooded. There needs to be something to separate the legends from the rest, but that something already exists..it's hard work. Those who put in the work are the ones who will stand out from the rest. This is why I always try to set goals and attain them.

What do you think of Drooble?

It's a really awesome platform for sharing your music with other artists and music lovers. I'm very new to it so I can't fully answer yet, but so far I love it!

What frustrates you most as a musician?

Playing an empty room, or releasing a song that nobody takes the time to listen to or give feedback whether it be good or bad. I just don't like being overlooked. The edm scene in my city has always been clique culture. If they don't know you, they won't book you for their events. They don't even give you a chance. This frustrated me so much I started my own collective of underground artists who are all uniquely talented, but are overlooked by those throwing shows and claiming to be all about "peace and love".. We started throwing our own events and we give people a chance. We aim to put these talented local artists on the map. We all work together and help each other grow as artists, and for me that's what it's all about. I love adding new dj's to our lineups. It brings diversity and gives those who have been overlooked a platform to share their music.

Do you support your local scene as a fan? How?

I support local artists, yes. I'm usually the one throwing the underground events so I'd say I'm a fan of the local scene. I no longer attend events of the underground "collaboratives" that have shut me down when I asked for a chance to prove myself. I simply do my own thing and try to help others so they aren't rejected without even being given a chance.

What qualities should a musician nowadays have in order to get their music heard by a larger audience?

This is something I struggle with myself. Personally, I don't want to sell my music. I want it to be free for everyone to enjoy. If another dj really likes my track and wants to play it in their sets, that is a way for my music to get out there. Also, shows and a stage presence are very important. There are so many electronic acts and other than having dope music, the way the legends stand out is by giving a memorable performance.

Share some awesome artists that we’ve never heard of.
