Russ Worstell

Musician, Producer, Engineer, and nerd.

What is music to you? What does it give you?

Music to me is my true language. It helps me communicate what simple words cannot. It allows me to put my overactive imagination into a frame I can present to anyone.

What is your music dream?

Tour, play in every continent, and make memories.

If you could change the world - what would you start with?

Too broad a question... I guess a priority on clean, renewable energy... Oh musically? I guess the people who put real effort into their music would get rewarded more, and the formulaic 1-4-5 or 1-5-6-4 approach would fall by the wayside.

Which is the most memorable song from your childhood?

Probably The Chain by Fleetwood Mac

Who are your favorite musical artists or bands?

A Wilhelm Scream, Propagandhi, The Descendents, The Flatliners, and PEARS right now

What inspires you to make music?

Pain and loss are huge. Overcoming adversities bring me new inspirations... Oh, and stepping out of my perspective to acknowledge how pointless this all is sometimes. It makes for good comedy, and keeps it light when need be.

What is the message you want to send with your music?

It's a short ride, and none of us deserve to be in it, so seize what you can, while you can, and find a way to love it.

How do you feel when you perform in front of an audience?

At home

How do you see the musicians’ reality nowadays? What could be improved?

Convenience and home comfort make it harder for live music to seduce the otherwise normal show-goer. A sense of real community is missing where it used to be before social media replaced it.

What do you think of Drooble?

Could be nice, if it brings about new opportunities... or it could end up another failed Facebook rival.

What frustrates you most as a musician?

Watching very talented musicians settle for low hanging fruit.

Do you support your local scene as a fan? How?

I get out to shows, I play in shows, and I buy local bands' merch. I also provide a cheap resource for bands to cut albums around here, as I have all of the gear and know-how to make a killer rock record

What qualities should a musician nowadays have in order to get their music heard by a larger audience?

Confidence, a willingness to try things outside of their wheelhouse, and a never-say-die attitude... and a lot of luck.

Share some awesome artists that we’ve never heard of.

Oh the Humanity, In the Meantime, A Very Special Episode, Wicked Bears (though you'll know them soon, I think), Pop Warner
