Rob Hartley

Story

I work from my little project home studio, primarily I write on guitar acoustic and electric but play bass, tinker with synths and have VST drums to put everything together. I'm passionate about creating music and writing/recording and collaborating with other serious like-minded artists. I tend to dabble with pop, rock, ambient, electronic....anything can happen! I'm not a singer, but if you are then maybe we can write together ?

What is music to you? What does it give you?

It's a creative outlet, a means of expression, turning a situation or a thought into something and to draw a line under something or someone through the art of music. It gives me freedom in my mind to think of something or hear something and transfer it from my mind into something I can listen to and feel. It's my escape, my parallel universe where I can do anything I like. It's a compulsion to make something and make sense of things in my own way.

What is your music dream?

Just to write music, collaborate, create songs, to use my time being creative rather than wasting time doing pointless things.

If you could change the world - what would you start with?

Less arguing and hate on social media

Which is the most memorable song from your childhood?

Welcome To My World by Jim Reeves. My dad played it frequently after the pub. It reminds me of being young before I grew up and woke up to reality.

Who are your favorite musical artists or bands?

Just so many things to mention from every decade going back to 20 years before I was even born.

What inspires you to make music?

Other music, people, situations, thoughts and feelings. It gives me a sense of purpose.

What is the message you want to send with your music?

I write and play the music I like, that makes me feel happy. If other people like it, that's great too. I don't really have a message, as such.

How do you feel when you perform in front of an audience?

I used to play in bands when I was younger. I tend to work from my home studio because of work commitments I can't realistically dedicate my time to a band but I would like to explore playing live music again at some point in the future, maybe and open stage acoustic event or something like that just to play with other musicians.

How do you see the musicians’ reality nowadays? What could be improved?

There seems to be a trend towards trying to make synthetic instruments sound real and trying to make the real human voice sound synthetic. I think those songs will date very quickly. I like to combine electronic and acoustic/real instruments and like to keep the human element in the music.

What do you think of Drooble?

I love it so far. Great place. I want to meet other musicians here and write songs together.

What frustrates you most as a musician?

Having to work, less time to spend in my studio and I'm never as good as I want to be lol, most musicians will tell you that :-)

Do you support your local scene as a fan? How?

I go to local gigs when I can.

What qualities should a musician nowadays have in order to get their music heard by a larger audience?

Good songwriting ability. There are still skilled, crafted songs being made amongst the usual stuff. Good songs will always find their way, i believe.
