Story

Avante is a 23-year-old Recording Artist, who grew up in a small community in rural St. Andrew called, King Weston. He attended the Lawrence Tavern Primary School and after his G.S.A.T. examinations, he continued his educational journey at the Oberlin High School. After High School, Avante attended the Edna Manley College of the Visual and Performing Arts where he got his Bachelor’s Degree in Music Education (Voice). He is the oldest of four children and the only boy for his mother Annette Smith and his father Owen McCaulsky. Avante’s first experience in a recording studio, was when he was only 12 years old and a part of a group of young singers, who were hired to do jingles for an American Elementary School. During his time at Oberlin High School, Avante joined the choir and became a lead singer for the choir in the All Together Sing (National High School Choir Competition). He was also a member and the lead singer of the school's very first band which won 3 Jamaica Cultural Development Commissions (J.C.D.C.) medals. Avante was also a member of the vocal quintet group “Total 5” between the year 2008 and 2014. He got his first experience of performing overseas in Florida by being a part of Total 5, this gave him a higher level of experience, as he grew as an artist and his passion deepened. He has been on numerous stages such as the Jamaica Jazz and Blues Festival on two occasions and Tarrus Riley and Friends on two occasions. His artistic techniques include singing, song-writing, playing the piano and vocal harmony arranging. Avante sees music as a creative way of expressing himself and a great way to communicate with people. He wants to use his music to inspire others to reach for greatness within themselves as well as, use it to express his sense of humour and to entertain people through these sad and barbaric times. He is a big fan of Marcus Garvey, who he looks up to because he was a leader who made us more aware of ourselves as human beings and the power that we possess. His musical influences are attributed to the late Peter Tosh, Bob Marley, Micheal Jackson, John Holt, Dennis Brown, Delroy Wilson and Lucky Dube and the list goes on. He currently as three singles “Concrete Jungle”, “World Crisis” and “Missing your love” that can be found on his YouTube channel Avante.

What is music to you? What does it give you?

Music is life to me. it provides me a medium through which i can express myself through song as singing and writing is all i am passionate about

What is your music dream?

To take Jamaica and reggae as far as i possibly can on the international market

If you could change the world - what would you start with?

Eliminating power hungry and greedy politicians and starvation

What inspires you to make music?

The responses i get from people whenever i sing inspires me greatly. but my ultimate inspiration was my first time doing a overseas gig in Florida in 2010. the reception from the audience made me realize that this is what i was born to do.

What is the message you want to send with your music?

Message of Peace and Unity, Basically anything that i feel. i express myself in a creative way and in some cases adding a sense of humor to make the story a bit more interesting and relative in some cases.

How do you feel when you perform in front of an audience?

I feel pleased to be sharing my music and to see their reactions make things even more special. reggae is soul music so it has to be performed with soul

How do you see the musicians’ reality nowadays? What could be improved?

Yes it could be improved and the way to do this is to know the history and what musicians who make it big time had to endure on their way to stardom

What do you think of Drooble?

It is an excellent platform for musicans to communicate and for promoters to source artist for their music festivals.

What frustrates you most as a musician?

Payola is a crime in Jamaica, yet still it is happening. it ruins the music industry. it hinders talent that cannot pay their way through

Do you support your local scene as a fan? How?

Of course, I have to go out to other peoples concert in and around Kingston whenever i get the time, it's not so much being a fan, but its more like supporting my friends

What qualities should a musician nowadays have in order to get their music heard by a larger audience?

They have to want it. want it to the point where they will give it all they got regardless of the size of the audience. Just represent your brand gracefully
