Murry Rhodes

Murry Rhodes

Worked my fingers to the bone on many an outback job until a few years ago.. Tinkered with a piano and taught myself to play as a closet hobby and a few years back got asked to play some background music at a country club.. That was the first domino to fall. From there on and 3-4 years later. I've developed some quick ways to learn full songs and even started writing songs using that method. i've built a studio into an old bus I call home parked in the tropical outback out of Darwin N.T. Taught myself how to record and master my music and produce albums, album art, distribution methods etc.. Website, social media, pretty much everything an Independent artists. Have been gigging and developing what I do and am just now getting airplay on radios across Australia. My next learning curve involves a Tour of Australia.. I would like to increase the dynamic of my music with other instruments and folks keen to jump on board. :D

What is music to you? What does it give you?

Before I talk about the special properties of how music soothes and rocks the soul. First and foremost it gives me an income.. A modest one at the moment but enough of an income to pay some bills and keep on doing music. Which is nice. 2ndly It's a challenge, so many things to learn about music and the industry. It's like a puzzle to solve and not only that, it soothes and rocks the soul.. :D

What is your music dream?

Pretty simple really.. I'm already living it.. I see peoples faces and the places I take them when they listen to my music.

If you could change the world - what would you start with?

I'm already changing the world adding more smiles to folks faces every day.. oh sorry, to start with I'd grab a cup of coffee and a packet of Tim Tams and ponder the world a while.

Which is the most memorable song from your childhood?

Pink Floyd's - The Wall

Who are your favorite musical artists or bands?

Pink Floyd , Led Zep , Deep Purple , George Thorogood , Bob Dylan , Eagles , Ray Charles , Louis Armstrong , ACDC , ELVIS , Billy Joel , Dr John , Dire Straights ,

What inspires you to make music?

Mostly I'm a story teller. I also like exploring new feelings that the piano can make. So musically I am simply exploring every genre and learning as I go... My first few songs "Life time Black Dog" and "Whispers in the Wind" were simply songs I wrote so I could learn myself a few chords and figure out how chords can change the feelings of a song. :D Lyrically I explore the world as I see it from a perspect of someone who has started with nothing and has travelled to the world. Observed people , places and faces. Music kind of tells their stories as much as my own. :D Of course some songs are just finding a Hook, a line and a beat and putting a rhyme scheme together. :D

What is the message you want to send with your music?

There are many messages I send.. Mostly evolving around folks forgiving folks and not letting the bad thoughts rule the good ones. Different environments, from nice outback fires to on the deck of a rich person's yacht.. It doen'st matter who you are or where you aref from, your are still human, so accept it and be human.. I guess. :D

How do you feel when you perform in front of an audience?

Exposed. For the scary moments and also the very cool moments.. When I see smiles and tears of (joy or nostalgia) it makes me feel enriched in life.

How do you see the musicians’ reality nowadays? What could be improved?

The industry has too many myths and this is making a lot of people with the passion and ability step away from their art to avoid the shame associated with those myths. the financial component also suffers because of these Myths.

What do you think of Drooble?

Don't know yet.. I haven't used it enough to form an informed opinion. It's seems like a great idea though and I;m looking forward to seeing how well it develops and works.

What frustrates you most as a musician?

At the grass roots level of gigs.. There are too many musicians undercutting other musicians, like seagulls chasing a chip.. The value of Music drops, the musicians then need second jobs which take them away from practice etc.. So the quality of the music goes down.. The quality of the music goes, then people don't go to watch live music at that venue. The venue loses more long term by saving a few dollars on the cheaper muso short term. The venue closes and the Musos can play no more. Music dies..

Do you support your local scene as a fan? How?

Yes, technical advice and promoting the idea that venues will pay more, if they ask.. Helping to drive up the economy for the business and the muso. :D

What qualities should a musician nowadays have in order to get their music heard by a larger audience?

Marketing strategies.. The internet has given a platform every taste in music.. High quality down to back yard quality.. The strategy is to find the market that suits what you are producing.

Share some awesome artists that we’ve never heard of.

Will do but Not yet.. :D
