Fred Campbell

Singer - Song Writer - Musician

I am a seasoned musician about to turn 60 years old. I've been playing guitar and writing music since I was 13 years old. I've always enjoyed performing live in front of as many people as possible and I love to sing more than anything else in the world. I started writing music as soon as I got my first guitar before I even knew any chords I was writing down inspirational ideas that came to me. After I finally learned a few chords I started putting some of my writings into song based formulas and combined them with some of the melodies I created and came up with quite a few pretty cool tunes. I continue to write and just decided it was time to get some of this stuff recorded. I'm always looking for someone with awesome recording equipment to collaborate with, hit me up if that is you.

What is music to you? What does it give you?

I feel into music when I was 13 years old. A friend of mine needed money and he sold me my first guitar for $5. It was a 4 string tenor guitar, a Stella Harmony acoustic. It was very cool and extremely easy to play. From that moment on I was hooked and I had found a new high. I was addicted to it and soon found out that my thoughts and feelings could be expressed through this little $5 addition to my life. Playing music has always been a release for me. If I had a bad week at work I couldn't wait for my next gig so I could play some loud rock and roll and release some steam. It continues to be my one main outlet for stress and it fits all of my many different moods. Music is for certain my drug of choice.

What is your music dream?

My dream has always been to play in front of thousands of people. I've played some pretty big festivals in my hometowns but playing in an arena filled with thousands of people and playing through a PA system that is powerful enough for those events is my all time dream come true. Playing in that arena and doing my original music with a backing band would be the ultimate dream come true.

If you could change the world - what would you start with?

Less hate, more understanding of people around us and their cultures, more free training for our children especially music related training, lots of free educational facilities all around the world to help out the less fortunate people that if they could be able to, they would change the world we live in with their untapped knowledge.

Which is the most memorable song from your childhood?

How much is that doggy in the window. Not sure why but it's one of the first songs I remember from my childhood. Probably something from kindergarten.

Who are your favorite musical artists or bands?

ZZ Tops, Great White, Loverboy, Judas Priest, Bob Seger, Sammy Hagar, Joe Satriani, Dokken, Firehouse, and so many more.

What inspires you to make music?

The world around me is the best source for me. I love listening to people talk and once in a while I'll hear something that touches my heart and I'll make a note of the topic and try to dig deep inside for more content. There's so much inspiration all around us everyday and what's important to me in writing music is generating a feeling or mood that someone else can connect with.

What is the message you want to send with your music?

Truth and honesty from deep in my soul with maybe a little fun or weirdness every now and then.

How do you feel when you perform in front of an audience?

It's a powerful feeling of confidence that I've never felt before. I was a bit of an outcast growing up and kind of an

How do you see the musicians’ reality nowadays? What could be improved?

The reality is the world is really saturated by so many musicians that want to be stars and unfortunately, it's just not going to happen for some of us. More places like Drooble would be awesome for people like me that don't have extra time or money to invest in their music career, it's more of just a hobby for me anymore. I gave up on the dream of being a professional musician long ago. I just want my music to be heard and appreciated.

What do you think of Drooble?

I've joined a lot of musician websites but most of them only want money to help you promote your music and I can understand that to a point, but some of the cost they require, are just ridiculously high and not practical for someone who works for a living and living paycheck to paycheck. I love Drooble so far and I've only been here for about a week or so.

What frustrates you most as a musician?

Finding people to jam with that have the same interest as me. I know it's tough for musicians to click but there are some many of us out there you would think it would be easier. Maybe places like Drooble are the answer. Maybe the right person for me to collaborate with is in another country.

Do you support your local scene as a fan? How?

I follow as many musicians and bands in my area as possible and have always promoted their shows along with my own. As well as their websites or social media. There's plenty of places to play live music in my area and I love to promote my fellow musicians especially if they are really good and our county is filled with talented musicians of all genres.

What qualities should a musician nowadays have in order to get their music heard by a larger audience?

I wish I knew that answer. I've always just been kind of laid back and not concerned about my musical future but I think you need to be more aggressive with your promotions if you are really serious about getting your music out to the world. Again, the biggest problem for most of us is the money issue. If I had the money I would have my music professionally recorded and then uploaded to iTunes, Spotify, etc. but you can't just sell the unprofessional stuff like I create to the world. It's just not completed or it's not how I really want the final product to sound.

Share some awesome artists that we’ve never heard of.

I don't think I have any special unknown artist to share with you. Most of what I follow anymore are well known bands that I have always followed. My new favorite Michigan band though it Greta Van Fleet. A bunch of young adults with a Led Zeppelin sound from Frankenmuth, MI. check them out, they will be going quite far I'm sure. http://gretavanfleet.com/
