Devin Campbell

Story

I started playing guitar when I was 7 years old. By the time I was 13 I was considered by most, a bonâ fidé prodigy. I studied Jazz Guitar at the Fine Arts Center in Greenville, SC. After graduating high school, I studied Guitar Performance at Belmont University in Nashville, TN. After receiving my B.M. in Commercial Guitar Performance with a Minor in Music Business, I spent 10 years in the Nashville area writing, recording, performing, touring, and teaching music. After my mother was diagnosed with cancer in 2016, I moved back to Greenville, SC and began focusing on teaching. Shortly after, I opened my own music school, The MusicNasium in Greer,SC, where I, and other instructors currently share our passion for music!

What is music to you? What does it give you?

Pure joy in this uncertain world. It's my constant, my heartbeat that keeps me going. It's my gift, and not just mine, but everyones. It's my legacy

What is your music dream?

Dreams are 1 thing, but reality is another, and I believe as long as you're a better musician tomorrow than you were today that's a dream come true. Very few are able to make a living doing what they love! I was lucky enough to find my passion at an early age, and I quickly realized you have to DIVERSIFY your TALENTS in order to make it. So, in many ways I've met my dream by making music a profitable career.

If you could change the world - what would you start with?

Equal opportunity for all people. Recognition for art and creation instead of theatrics, money, and nepotism

Which is the most memorable song from your childhood?

That's tough, but it would have to be me and my ma jamming to Enter Sandman-Metallica

Who are your favorite musical artists or bands?

Jason Becker, Steve Vai, Joe Satriani Wes Montgomery, Joe Pass, Charlie Parker Bach, Andrés Segovia, and Heitor Villa-Lobos

What inspires you to make music?

What doesn't?! We're sorrounded by music all the time! The drip of a faucet, the wind blowing the leaves, even the pitch of an exhaust can be looked at as music. But it ultimately boils down to The fact that I won't be forgotten, I'll have a mixtape of my life that family members and others can reflect and remember me.

What is the message you want to send with your music?

Don't obsess... Life is meant for the living! Keep the obsession of comparing yourself to others as fleeting thoughts, because they will only cripple your progress

How do you feel when you perform in front of an audience?

It's the best drug in the world. It's tough to put into words, but that's the closest I can get to it. It's the ride you don't have to get off of because the park is closing, it's just making that yellow light when you're running late. It's the best way to communicate to the masses

How do you see the musicians’ reality nowadays? What could be improved?

our reality is evolving to session work and lessons. Live music is not part of the program many places. I don't believe we really need to "improve our reality" just adapt to it by working hard through social media platforms...Like this ONE!!!

What do you think of Drooble?

inventive, and long over due. There were issues last time I was active, but those have sense gone. I'll get back to you on this one ;)

What frustrates you most as a musician?

The amount of work that goes uncredited. The business aspect of the machine The toxic way of thinking within the guitar community all together.

Do you support your local scene as a fan? How?

I do in the sense that I teach at the Collegiate level. Ushering in the next generation of musicians. Do I go out to shows often, no. Mainly because, I can't separate myself from analyzing what I'm hearing/seeing. I can't enjoy it.

What qualities should a musician nowadays have in order to get their music heard by a larger audience?

They have to be brave, because the ability to put yourself out to millions of ppl takes bravery. Confidence and security in your musical skin. Talent isn't enough anymore, you have to be a graphic designer, a photographer, a writer, etc... and you have to do all of those things on multiple platforms until you find the one that works for you. It takes pre-planning and shot angles. Requirements not taught in Music School...
