Subversive Guitar Fantasies

I'm looking to do something a little different with guitar as an instrumentalist. I want to infuse instrumental guitar with an expressive fashion aesthetic as a performer, and I desire to imbrue a staid genre with a transfusion of the subversive, an inclusion of multiple styles and genres. I believe in undermining the normate, the normal, the socially unacceptable. I believe in defiance. I believe in flaunting publically that which is restricted, especially that which we are shamed for. I believe in blurring the lines between male and female. I believe in creating a safe space where people can freely be who they really are, free from worry or fear of repercussions or the type of judgement that marginalizes people who are a little different. I believe in inviting an audience to be an integral part of the musical performance/experience, and in extending the "stage" to include the dancefloor/audience space. I BELIEVE IN CREATING CULTURE. (But I can't do it alone.) I invite you to join me in this attempt to create a space and an experience. I INVITE EVERYONE TO HELP CREATE A MASQUERADE. And not just once a year on Halloween; afterall, Halloween is NOT a masquerade. Halloween is when we dress up as someone/thing WE ARE NOT. I want to create a safe space to dress up as who we really are BUT ARE AFRAID TO BE due to social pressure. That is the critical difference between Halloween and a Masquerade. And why not have several masquerades throughout the year? Why not create the change we wish to see? Why not create the change we wish to be?

What is music to you? What does it give you?

Music grants empowerment to defy the social normate. It gives all musicians (moi included) the ability to challenge the world we find ourselves in. N.W.A., Jimi Hendrix, Motley Crue, Madonna, Prince, Elvis, Duke Ellington, Stravinsky, Debussy...all of whom challenged the artistic beliefs of the people during their time.

What is your music dream?

To host the most delicious masquerade ball. I would love to perform for an audience that dresses for a masquerade and subsequently creates an experieince that, as a performer or band , I cannot.

If you could change the world - what would you start with?

Eradicating greed.

Which is the most memorable song from your childhood?

Round n Round - Ratt. When I saw the music video, I knew that that's what I wanted to do.

Who are your favorite musical artists or bands?

too many to list right now...maybe I'll adjust this later

What inspires you to make music?

I love taking any opportunity to undermine the normate. Every time I play or create I'm doing just that.

What is the message you want to send with your music?

You all are beautiful, sexy beings. Have the courage to embrace your delicious "otherness".

How do you feel when you perform in front of an audience?

It depends on the audience. Most of the time, audience members don't engage in their freedom to express themselves at an event; they simply show up looking to entertained. I wish they knew that they could be a part of the show too.

How do you see the musicians’ reality nowadays? What could be improved?

Is there a musicians' reality?

What do you think of Drooble?

Not sure yet...but I've met some awesome artists here. And found some really good content. But then again, I haven't really started testing those boundaries... ;)

What frustrates you most as a musician?

When I see artists who do things because they believe they have to do it in order to get whatever it is that they want.

Do you support your local scene as a fan? How?

Yes. I go out to support local acts at Jam Nights and Open Mics. But they are few and far in-between.

What qualities should a musician nowadays have in order to get their music heard by a larger audience?

I think it would be wise to understand how and where social media flows.

Share some awesome artists that we’ve never heard of.

Lady Valentine "Candyfloss", VOODOO ZOMBIE, Your Girl J.
